  • Overview

    The Transport Logistics Nurse is responsible for assisting in planning, providing, evaluating and documenting direct patient care including those patients with complex and involved care needs both inside and outside the hospital and clinic setting. Maintains a safe, therapeutic and organized environment. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide age appropriate care and to provide the care needed. All duties and care provided will be performed in accordance with Guardian Flight policies. All care delivered in preparation for transport and during transport will be implemented within the written treatment protocols approved by the Medical Director or treatment guidelines received from on line medical control.

    1. Prepare patients for ground and air medical transport in accordance with their condition, ensuring that the patient and any equipment is transferred appropriately.
    2. Assist ground crew, flight crew, or hospital staff in administering medications as required, following all written treatment protocols approved by the Medical Director of Guardian Flight or treatment guidelines received from on‐line medical control
    3. Help direct and administer patient care following all written treatment protocols approved by the Medical Director of Guardian Flight or treatment guidelines received from on‐line medical control while caring for patients both inside and outside the hospital and clinic setting.
    4.  Provides skillful delivery of BLS, ALS, and Critical Care and all procedures in accordance with Guardian Flight protocols or treatment guidelines received from on‐line medical control. Anticipates patient care needs and ensure availability of appropriate resources. Demonstrates knowledge of field application of emergency, critical care medicine and air medical physiology.
    5. Ensures accurate and efficient transfer of patient information, records and responsibilities to transporting staff. Transfer of care is facilitated by written and verbal communications to receiving staff.
    6. Expedites return to service by efficient transfer of care, record completion and readiness of aircraft and equipment into service. Advises readiness to Communications Specialist on duty.
    7. Supports and promotes the organization’s programs of Quality, Risk, Infection Control, Safety, and Compliance. Adheres to infection control policies. Maintains a clean, safe environment for patients and co‐workers. Follows safety procedures and notifies the Safety Officer of real or potential safety hazards.
    8. Demonstrates maturity and accountability for job performance. Supports the philosophy, objectives and goals of Guardian Flight and assesses areas of personal and professional growth.
    9. Maintains personal readiness and responds to requests in an expedient manner following expected guidelines.
    10. Ensures readiness of all equipment and supplies needed for patient transport. Conducts daily check of supplies and equipment to insure working condition and availability.
    11. Requests equipment maintenance, orders supplies and communicates such in the prescribed manner. Maintains knowledge regarding operation, care and maintenance of vital medical equipment.
    12. Restocks, cleans and prepares supplies and equipment for efficient response readiness. Debriefing is to be completed as soon as feasible after every transport. All transport personnel and communication specialists are to participate in the mission debriefing. Areas of improvement identified are to be communicated among the team and recorded in appropriate document or communication tool.
    13. Completes patient documentation in prescribed and timely manner.
    14. Maintains awareness of all operations and goals of Guardian Flight. Performs as a fully informed team member by annually and upon revision reviewing policies, procedures, protocols and organizational goals. Displays sound judgment and identify appropriate need to vary from established policies and procedures under extreme circumstances.  Abide by all company standards as outlined in the Employee Handbook and relevant policies
    15. Contributes to adequate staffing by reporting to work when scheduled, on time, and ready to respond. Adheres to attendance policy. Supports staffing through flexibility and concern for shift coverage and budget. Requests time off in advance in accordance to procedures. Supports coworkers by assisting with flexible scheduling.
    16. Must be able to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
    17. Complete other duties as assigned


    1. Participates in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement activities. Continually seeks ways to enhance company performance, safety, efficiencies and effectiveness.
    2. Active in development of quality improvement standards related to all program activities. Effectively communicates problem resolution and offers ideas and support for quality service delivery. Participates in patient follow up for QA/I purposes and customer satisfaction.
    3. Maintains all required certification and training education. Assumes responsibility for own attendance at all scheduled training sessions to maintain, improve or upgrade advanced practice and operational skills.
    4. Actively seeks opportunities for professional development. Supports team members who participate in teaching activities and/or participate in teaching opportunities within the flight program or healthcare region.


    1. Adopts the Guardian Flight Code of Ethics policy into individual practice. Demonstrates knowledge and participation in maintaining an ethical environment during all Guardian Flight activities and associations.
    2. All Guardian Flight employees are expected to maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with the HIPPA act.
    3. Participate in marketing and promotion of Guardian Flight by supporting organizational goals, professional conduct, exhibiting organizational pride and delivery of the highest quality service possible to the customer and community



    (Any equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, abilities, education and experience)


    Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nurse with a minimum of an associate’s degree. BSN is preferred. 

    Experience: A minimum of four years current nursing experience as a registered nurse, preferably in emergency or critical care nursing. 

    Licensure: Current State of Alaska Nursing License within 90 days of start date.  Current BLS, ACLS and PALS certification required. Current and valid Alaska Driver’s License and Passport required. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification must be successfully completed within 3 months of hire; approved trauma course within 12 months of hire; successful completion of the Alaska State Medevac Course during orientation; must test for and obtain CFRN within 12 months of hire.

    Other Qualifications: Must be able to effectively demonstrate mastery in the use of monitoring and treatment equipment, including cardiac monitor/pacer/defibrillator, IV pump, I-State portable blood gas analyzers, transport ventilators etc.  Will maintain skills such as endotracheal intubation, tube thoracostomy, 12‐lead EKG interpretation, and multiple IV drip administration. See educational guidelines for frequency and number of skills required per year. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills and able to work in a team environment.  Must maintain ability to pass repeat background checks and ability to possess an identification badge issued by the base location airport security.


    Attendance: Regular attendance is required for this position.

    English Language:  Must be able to read, write and speak English.
